We had a busy few weeks with lots of tournaments as well as all our usual leagues and a special day for Canada Day. We have also been busy with hosting corporate events, having people drop in to just plan and doing lesson and we have had over 398 non members come down and bowl in the past 6 weeks so there has been lots going on to keep us all busy.
We held a Bowls Sale on June 3. We sold every set of used bowls (all the way up to size seven) to players from clubs across the city!
The Provincial Fours was held from June 22 – 24th and the players from Edmonton and Calgary battled the weather on Fri and Sat and then were rewarded with a beautiful and sunny day to end the event. We had 21 Calgary Lawn members playing in the event and are excited that members from our club were on all but one of the 6 winning teams!
Men’s Gold medal was won by the team of Roy Riege, Peter Mok, Paul Maskell and Mike O’Reilly
Men’s Silver was won by Greg Wilson, Kevin Childs, Ken Olsvik and Derek Dillon
Men’s Bronze was won by Pat Bird, Lyall Adams, Francis Standen and Herman Cooper.
Women’s gold medal was won by Jan Robinson, Peggy Plathan, Bev Robinson and Patricia Walker
Women’s Silver was won by Claire Day, Joanne Cooper, Jenn MacDonald and Val Wilson
Women’s Bronze was won by Cecelia Gillespie, Pat Vos, Chris Adams and Keira Schaelow.
We celebrated Canada Day with 38 members coming down to the club to play or watch. We started the morning off by taking our annual Canada Day photo and singing O Canada. We then played 3 games with a break for lunch and one for Canada Day cake. The winning team was Peter Mok, Cathy Dallas, Brad Hadubiak, Sue Bente.
Our club singles were held on the Saturday and Monday of the Canada Day weekend and once again the players got to experience rain, wind and sun during their games. The winner of the ladies was Leona Hatton and the winner of the men’s was Francis Standen. There were many close games with quite a few games lasting over 20 ends as the players battled it out to be the first to 21 points. Congratulations to all players for conquering the numbers of ends they all played in 2 days and congratulations to the winners!
The Provincial Pairs were held the weekend of July 6th and 7th in Edmonton with 6 players from our club competing and all 6 of them placing in the medals. Pat Bird and Jon McDonald won Gold, Derek Dillon and Greg Wilson won Silver and in the ladies Jen McDonald and Pauline Wong won Bronze.
The Provincial Singles held in Edmonton the weekend of July 13th & 14th, with several players from our club competing and we are pleased to say that Greg Wilson won the Men’s Gold, Pat Bird won the Men’s Bronze and Bev Robinson won ladies Bronze.
Lastly, we had about 20 CLBC members attend the annual Stanley Park Stampede Breakfast and Jitney on July 15th. Congratulation to all who participated. Our club had members on all the winning teams. Way to go!
Our season is now underway with lots of action on the bowling green. We are currently using just one green while we allow the 2nd green to grow after having been reseeded in the fall. Lots of people have been trying out lawn bowling and taking lessons.
We had a club tournament at the start of June and thanks go to Phil, Cathy, Rod, Linda, Lindsay and Janette for looking after the BBQ. The winner of the day was the team of Mike O’Reilly, Gay Buckland and Shari Henry.
Our club pairs were this past weekend and 8 men and 4 ladies teams survived the lousy weather on Saturday and then enjoyed beautiful conditions of Sunday. Congratulations go to Peter Mok and Pat Bird for winning the men’s section and Cathy Selzler and Janette Mackie for winning the ladies.
